Paternity debate: Dads need time off to bond too

South African men would like more time at home with their children when they become fathers.

HE SPEAKS with so much love and excitement about his first child. And at nine months old, the little girl is the spitting image of her doting dad.

Kabelo Mkhize* (36) works at a major health insurance company, and the news that he was going to be a dad hit him for a six.

Kabelo’s wife, Naledi* (32), went to her parents in Canada to give birth. ?Four months later, she returned to her husband with baby in hand.

“I was so excited to see her [his daughter] and spend time with her,” Kabelo says. “Unfortunately, I only received three days’ family responsibility leave from work. I felt like I didn’t have time to bond with my daughter.
