Radio and television personality Pearl Thusi’s access card to access the SABC has been blocked.

According to the SABC spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, this was done because “she resigned from the SABC and this is done in any work environment when you resign from the company”.

Kaizer further tells us that Pearl’s sacking from Metro FM is because “she did not ask permission to enter into an engagement with her current employer, which is MTV – the SABC’s direct competition.

“There are clauses in every talent’s contract that state that in the event that the talent gets an opportunity elsewhere, they must obtain permission from the SABC to engage with the new employer, so that their schedules don’t clash, for example if you have a 9-12 slot at Metro FM, you can't accept a job as a teacher, because it will clash with your other job at Metro FM,” Kaizer told us.

We ask him why Robert Marawa is able to keep two jobs, one at Metro FM and the other at SuperSport, without getting sacked. “Robert’s contract was handled before the SABC came up with the new rules, so these new rules don’t apply to him, because his was done long before,” Kaizer replied.

Meanwhile, Metro FM DJ Bonang Matheba infamously got her job back at the station last year after failing to obtain permission from the SABC to sign a contract with SuperSport, yet Kaizer insists that “nobody is getting preferential treatment at the broadcaster”.
