Solly Phetoe has been named Deputy General Secretary of Cosatu, the only executive position that was contested at the 12th National Congress at the Gallagher Estate in Midrand on 26 November.

Phetoe was Cosatu’s North West Provincial Secretary. He contested the position against the Deputy General Secretary of the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa), Oscar Phaka.

Phetoe, who has been a trade unionist since 1983 was elated, and told DRUM that he will continue to work hard to protect the most vulnerable workers, especially farm and domestic workers.

"As long as the workers are happy with what I am doing, I'm happy," he said.

Sdumo Dlamini was elected unopposed as the president. His First Deputy President Tyotyo James, Second Deputy President Zingiswa Losi and Treasurer Freda Oosthuysen were also elected unopposed.

Tyotyo shed tears of joy when jubilant delegates hoisted him up and danced with him after he was pronounced as the winner.

Bheki Ntshalintshali was also elected unopposed as Cosatu’s General Secretary. He has been acting in the position, which was occupied by Zwelinzima Vavi who was expelled in March. Ntshalintshali served as Vavi’s deputy before he was expelled.
