National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega says the killing of two protestors by police at Rhelela village outside Tzaneen is justified.

National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega says that while police officers should try and uphold the constitution of the country, the killing of two protestors by police at Rhelela village outside Tzaneen is justified, SABC reports.

Phiyega arrived at the scene of the shooting to address angry community members.

Hundreds of residents took their protest to the local satellite police station.

Police tried to disperse them with rubber bullets but were outnumbered and resorted to live ammunition.

Two men were killed instantly and scores of others injured.

Roads leading to the village have been barricaded with burning tyres and stones and police re-inforcements have been rushed to the area.
