National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega has been under investigation following claims that she had tipped off a police officer about probes against him. Western Cape commissioner Lt-Gen Arno Lamoer was under investigation for allegedly being associated with a Cape Town drug-dealer and well-known businessman.  Phiyega is said to have alerted Lamoer to this on three occasions. Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) have recordings of conversations to this effect between Phiyega and Lamoer.   In the conversations, Phiyega reportedly made Lamoer aware of similar allegations by Hawks boss Anwa Dramat. Phiyega denied tipping Lamoer off, claiming he found out about the investigation after opposition party Democratic Alliance asked a question about it in Parliament.

"[The case] went to the director of public prosecutions before the elections, at the end of May. We await their decision,"  Ipid spokesman Moses Dlamini said.
