Pirates’ Juju Mbuyane

THERE was a time he would think nothing of dropping R3 500 on alcohol and snacks in one night. But those careless days of excess and extravagance have been abandoned along with his bachelor status – these days Thulasizwe Mbuyane is far more content at home with his wife and son and a plate of pap and chicken!

And that’s exactly what’s cooking on the stove when DRUM visits the Orlando Pirates striker at his cosy home in the upmarket suburb of Glen Marais in Kempton Park, not far from OR Tambo International Airport. The 27-year-old soccer star is enjoying a rare afternoon off – he’s come down with flu, he tells us, sipping from a glass of orange juice. “I’m quite sick. I was excused from training today.”

Sorry as we are to hear he’s not well it does give us the chance to pin down the elusive star and see this nifty, ruthless striker who terrorises opponents week in and week out in an entirely different light.

Away from the competitive world of the PSL, Juju, as he’s affectionately known, is a softly-spoken family man who dotes on his six-year-old son, Siyanda, and snuggles up to Refiloe (23), his wife of three months. “Baby number two is on the way,” he says, smiling and pointing at Refiloe’s tummy. “Yes,” she says, nodding. “I’m five months’ pregnant now.”
