Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa is being sued for R1.4 million over a false arrest, The Star newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Ronald Mashego, a field technician, claimed his lobola celebration was ruined when police arrested him in front of his family and friends on an attempted robbery charge on August 28.

In papers filed at the High Court in Pretoria, Mashego says he was stressed, agonised and traumatised after being detained for four hours.

He was then moved to another police station where he developed bronchitis in a cold cell, and had missed work for four days.

He is claiming R200,000 for his future medical expenses and R1.2 million for pain, suffering and trauma.

The minister had not yet responded and the application was postponed indefinitely.
