Portia Modise came one step closer to realising her dream of owning a home, when she won R1 million at the sports awards held at Sandton Convention in Sandton, Johannesburg recently.

Portia touched the hearts of many for the milestone she reached in her career this year, scoring 100 international goals - becoming the only footballer to achieve this in Africa. Her dream of buying a house for herself and her mother also moved many to vote for her.  Relating her experience on the evening she was announced as the overall winner of the cash prize, she told Sowetan, “I was nervous before they announced my name. I think it was the highlight of my career, I was nominated in a category full of men”.

The money is not all she won, as there is car as well and according to South African Sports Awards officials, she will receive it later this week, while the money will follow later this year. Expressing her excitement, the soccer star, said, “After winning this award, there is nothing more I could ask for”.

She will donate half her winnings to Cruse Women’s football team she also plays for. “ I think it will help the club and help them improve,” she told the newspaper.
