A Right2Know member has opened a case of assault after allegedly being slapped and manhandled by members of the police’s VIP protection unit at the SONA.

A pregnant University of Pretoria student and her boyfriend have opened a case of common assault after allegedly being attacked on campus by private security guards, police have confirmed.

The Brooklyn police were investigating Monday's incident, which was as a result of a disagreement over student housing, police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said.

Weilbach said a group of students were apparently still on campus just before midnight when campus and private security asked them to leave.

The students alleged that the security guards pushed them around and at one of the gates, some of the students retaliated by throwing stones at the guards.

One of the guards then allegedly slapped the pregnant student.

The case will be taken to the Hatfield Community Court for a decision after the investigation is completed, said Weilbach.

University of Pretoria spokesperson Candice Jooste said the university condemned all types of violence against students and staff.

She said the university would investigate the matter.
