Zambian president, Michael Sata, has been taken to hospital in New York City.

He had been in NYC for an annual world leaders gathering at the UN General Assembly but was unable to deliver his scheduled address due to poor health.

New York Deputy Police Chief Kim Royster said president Sata was treated at his hotel by U.S. State Department doctors on Thursday and then taken to a hospital. She had no details on his condition.

Sata, who is about 77, became Zambia's fifth president in 2011 after three failed attempts.

He is known as a staunch advocate for the poor and an opponent of Chinese investment in Zambia's mines.

Sata had also been to Israel for medical treatment in June.
