A taxi owner was shot dead in his car in front of the Centurion Taxi Association's office in Pretoria, Beeld newspaper reported on Friday.

Several shots were fired at Frans Mnguni, 41, while he was sitting in his car on Thursday.

His brother Godfrey, a paramedic in the SA National Defence Force, told the Afrikaans daily he was convinced the drive-by shooting was related to taxi rivalry.

"He [his brother] has been talking about getting a new route."

Mnguni is survived by his wife and three children.
