A 15-year-old pupil was stabbed to death at a school in Bishop Lavis, Cape Town, police said on Thursday.

The teenager, from Matroosfontein, was found with a stab wound to the neck around 11am on Wednesday, said Captain Frederick van Wyk.

He said witnesses claimed the boy was stabbed by a 17-year-old pupil and died on the scene.

The victim was a pupil at the Bishop Lavis School of Skills, said Jessica Shelver, spokeswoman for provincial education MEC Debbie Schafer.

Shelver said the boy was stabbed outside the school premises when he was on his way home.

"The Western Cape education department is saddened by this tragic and senseless loss of such a young life," she said.

A social worker visited the school on Wednesday and Thursday to debrief pupils and would be available for counselling for the rest of the week.

Van Wyk said the circumstances surrounding the stabbing were unclear.

A murder case was opened and no arrests had yet been made.
