The weekend is here and what’s nicer than a few steaks and yummy fries for the kids? And if you can put a healthy spin on it with this delicious recipe for New York Strip Steak and beetroot fries from Checkers, all the better.

  • Serves 2–4

You'll need:

  • 500 g – 1 kg New York Strip Steak; dependent on amount of people
  • 150 ml cream cheese per steak
  • 6–8 peppadews per steak
  • 4 beetroots; uncooked
  • Fresh spinach
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Do this:

Heat a pan, with no oil in it, until extremely warm. Cut a hole into the side of the steak. Stuff with the cream cheese and peppadews. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Drizzle olive oil over the steak and place into the pan. Pan-fry until meat is done as per your preference (4 min. each side for medium-rare).

Cut the beetroots into the shape of French fries. Heat a pot of oil and add the beetroots. Cook until soft and deep in colour. For the spinach, add a bit of oil into a pan. Break spinach leaves into pieces. Spice with salt and pepper and fry until done.

Serving suggestion:

Layer the spinach with steak and beetroot over it. Serve with salt and pepper on the side.
