Finally, South Africa’s favorite gospel star Rebecca Malope will have a musical theater production based on her life and songs – a dream that she has had for many years.

Despite several bids by various producers vying to take on the project, Sis Ribs decided she would produce the show because no-one knows her better than she knows herself.

“It’s my story and no one can tell it better than me. Directors come with their own agendas, so I have decided to be wary of people who could easily hijack the idea,” she says. “Bottom line is that this is my story.”

Fittingly so, the musical is titled Angigedwa: This is My Story and Malope has roped in Phuthuma Tiso and Sabata Masoka from Joyous Celebration to assist with the music.

Iconic producer Sizwe Zako also forms part of the team and 25 year old Eutychia Rakaki has been cast to play the leading role.

“We auditioned for three days at Downtown Studio in Johannesburg and people came from as far as KZN,” she says. “I was involved in the auditions, and the great thing with the talent in the cast is that they are very raw.”

Rakaki cannot contain her excitement about playing a young Rebecca and says she is humbled by the experience.

“It’s an honour to be cast as young Rebecca, she’s such a huge figure of our contemporary pop culture,” she says.

As a director, Malope’s biggest challenge is choosing the right songs for the musical as she has over 20 albums to choose from.

“We have to have about 15 songs, but right now we already have 30 and we don’t know which ones to take out,” she adds.

There is still a lot of work to be done, but the musical will come out in December.
