Mike Steenkamp, uncle to murdered model Reeva Steenkamp, says the Correctional Services Department has a short memory.

Mike Steenkamp, uncle to murdered model Reeva Steenkamp, says “The Correctional Services Department has a short memory [about what Pistorius did]. If they grant these things they must think he is a model prisoner," he told TIMESLIVE.

Oscar’s new rerating gives him privileges which include:

  • Contact visits;
  • A radio in his cell;
  • He may wear jewellery;
  • Permission to make 24 phone calls a year instead of the six;
  • Permission to take up a hobby; and
  • A raised prison allowance from R100 to R150

Pistorius was sent to Pretoria's Kgosi Mampuru II prison four months ago and was sentenced to five years in jail for the shooting.

Although he is scheduled for consideration for release into house arrest in August, an appeal by the state against both the conviction and the sentence could see this change.

Gauteng Correctional Services’ Ofentse Morwane told TIMESLIVE that the classification of all prisoners was reviewed periodically by prisons' case management committees.
