Police are investigating a brutal attack in which a man, 23, was allegedly gang-raped at gunpoint on Sunday night in an apparent act of retribution for apparently stealing scrap metal.

The man, badly beaten, allegedly sodomised and forced to perform oral sex on his attackers under threat of death, is recovering in a Durban hospital.

Reaction Unit South Africa’s (RUSA) security guards and paramedics first attended to the man yesterday after he was found wandering naked near the Phoenix Industrial Park, north of Durban.

RUSA head Prem Balram said its members were called out to attend to a seriously injured male who was found naked, with open head wounds and bodily injuries.

“The man told officers he was accosted by a scrapyard owner in Phoenix over the alleged theft of scrap metal. The owner drew a pistol and took the victim to an area within the premises where he was allegedly beaten by two men who, on instruction of the owner, allegedly raped him,” Balram said.

“The victim stated that both men sodomised him and then beat him with an iron pipe, causing his head and back to bleed profusely. The owner again pointed a pistol at him and allegedly instructed him to perform oral sex on both the men. The victim complied and was sent away without his clothing. He collapsed alongside the road and was found by a passer-by,” Balram said.

Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker confirmed that detectives were investigating the matter, but no arrests have yet been made.

“A male was allegedly assaulted and raped at gunpoint. He was accused of stealing from the scrapyard ... and was assaulted, then raped,” Naicker said.
