R.I.P Brown Dash

Dancing to the kwaito song Ngeke Balunge he reminded everyone of the days when he raised the roof wherever he performed in South Africa.

With a hand on his forehead as if shielding his eyes from the fierce rays of the sun and bobbing his head rhythmically, Simphiwe Mpamile (33), aka Brown Dash, rocked the 18th South African Music Awards (Sama ) stage.

The signs of his ailing health were conspicuous but nothing stopped him from showing the Sama patrons and his fellow musicians that music, performing and entertaining were part of his existence. Not even Spikiri, Brickz and Vuyo Mgudlwa, aka Madluphuthu, who shared the stage with him and appeared to be as healthy as horses, could outperform him.

But on 9 May – coincidentally the same date on which legendary artist Brenda Fassie passed away in 2004 – Brown Dash took his final bow at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto. He’d been in and out of hospital since 2010 although it is still unclear what he died from.

But earlier this year there were reports from those privy to his private life that he had been suffering from several ailments, including pneumonia, a stressinduced condition, and at one stage needed to have water siphoned from his lungs.
