Lethabo Gumede has been caught in a custody battle between his parents which has landed him in a psychiatric ward for evaluation.

Fourteen-year-old Lethabo Gumede who is best known for his role on My Perfect Family has been caught in a custody battle between his parents which has landed him in a psychiatric ward for evaluation.

Sowetan reports that Gumede's parents, Futhi Gumede and George Maila, never married and the teenager had always been in his mother's care until recently.

"He [Maila] was not supportive since the child was born. Now that he sees him on television he wants to be part of his life," Gumede said as quoted by the newspaper.

Gumede had allegedly been behaving erratically and that is why is mother booked him in for psychiatric evaluation.

"I wanted him to get help because I did not understand him anymore," she admits to the daily.

After being released from evaluation, the teen star opted to live with his father instead.

"After he was discharged from hospital he dumped me and moved in with his father. His father poisoned him and told him bad things about me," Gumede explained to Sowetan.

Maila on the hand has been reported as rubbishing the claims by his ex.

"There was a decision taken by the social workers that my son was far better off staying with me. I have the report and that is how I managed to get hold of him," Maila says as quoted by the paper.

"It was an internal matter that was discussed with the family. I don't know why she runs to the media," Maila reportedly continued.

"As the biological father, I don't need legal custody. Based on the consultation, the child chose to come and stay with me."

Lethabo Gumede was acted alongside the likes of Baby Cele, Lilian Dube and John Lata.
