An Indonesian court sentenced a South African man convicted of drug trafficking to life imprisonment, according to a report on Thursday.

Brett Theo Savage, 44, was arrested last year after allegedly trying to bring almost three kilograms of crystal-methamphetamine into the island of Bali, the Witness reported.

The Bali Daily website reported that Judge IGAB Komang Wijaya Adhi told the court on Wednesday that Savage was part of an international drug smuggling syndicate.

Savage's former employer in his home town of Pietermaritzburg said he was surprised to hear Savage had been accused of drug smuggling.

“His family came first and work second, which was honourable, but I think it cost him a lot of things,” said the man, who asked not to be named.
