Samsung has given its global fans their first official glimpse of the new Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones.

Gloves are off in the bitter battle of the smartphone market.

South Korean multinational

Samsung unveiled their new devices at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona. The new smartphones boast innovative features that aim to take on arch-rival Apple.

“With the all new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, Samsung is offering what’s next in mobility, along with a new standard to drive the global mobile agenda,” said Craige Fleischer, Director of Integrated Mobility at Samsung Electronics South Africa.

Samsung has now joined the elite group of smartphones makers, including Apple, HTC and others, in favouring a better design over that replacement capability.

Younghee Lee, Samsung’s Head of Global Marketing, said, ”It takes 800 degrees Celsius just to curve the glass. When dealing with tens of millions of devices this was once impossible. But you know what? We did it. Now we have the first devices of this kind – the S6 Edge. It has an amazing viewing experience, a more comfortable grip, and above all your friends will think it's very cool."

• The phone is available in an array of colourful jewel tones, including White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum, Blue Topaz and Green Emerald.

• Both phones are equipped with incredibly vivid, bright and fast front and rear cameras.

• The phones also sport incredibly fast wired charging, that is 1,5 times faster than the Galaxy S5, providing about 4 hours of usage after only 10 minutes of charging.

• Samsung Pay, a new, easy-to-use mobile payment service that will be compatible with more locations than any competing offering in a single application, will launch on Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge in the United States during the second half of this year.

The two smartphones will be available globally from 10 April.
