A sangoma who performed rituals on Marikana mineworkers was shot and killed in Bizana, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

Alton Joja, 69, was at home on Sunday when several armed men confronted him, Colonel Sibongile Soci said.

"It is alleged that five unknown men armed with pistols and rifles entered the deceased's homestead, and he [Joja] went out to enquire what they were looking for."

When he approached their car, they started shooting at him. They fled and their car was later found abandoned. Joja died on arrival at hospital. A murder case was opened.

The Farlam Commission of Inquiry heard on Monday that Joja was believed to have performed rituals on protesting Lonmin mineworkers in Marikana, North West. The inquiry heard that police had been making efforts to bring the sangoma to testify before the commission.
