Security has been tightened in and around the villages of Mthatha in the Eastern Cape as the province awaits the arrival of former president Nelson Mandela on Saturday.

In the village of Qunu where he will be buried, the army and police have taken control to ensure strict security.

Defence force armoured cars have occupied every village in and around Mthatha, while heavily armed soldiers and police are lining up from Mthatha CBD to Nelson Mandela drive leading to Qunu village.

Thousands of villagers are beginning to form a human chain to honour Madiba whose is expected to arrive at the airport around noon.

The Nelson Mandela Museum vicinity is swamped by local and international media, with satellite dishes occupying the hill not far from Madiba's home.
