"Senzo was not just a great footballer, he was also a kind person. Senzo was everything. "

Bafana coach, Shakes Mashaba, was visibly upset by the news of Senzo Meyiwa’s death and revealed that he had Senzo as his first option when thinking about who to take with to the national team's next match in Sudan. According to Mashaba, Senzo was also to be made captain at that match.

Barely being able to speak, the coach said tragedy usually strikes when everyone least expects it. "We were still cruising and strategizing for our next match when news of Senzo's untimely death came," he recalled.

Mashaba spoke kindly of the 27 year-old both as a sportsman and as a person: "Senzo was not just a great footballer, he was also a kind person. Senzo was everything. He was a leader and the link within the team as a captain."

Fighting back his tears throughout his address, Mashaba urged the nation to stay strong in prayer and unity and wished Senzo well in his journey to the afterlife: "We're going to miss him. I have no doubt that he will be the man he was here, wherever he's going."
