The State wants serial killer Bulelani Mabhayi to be sentenced to lengthy imprisonment for raping and killing several women and children in Tholeni in the Eastern Cape, the DispatchOnline reported on Friday. State prosecutor Ndoyisile Lamla recommended Mabhayi be given a minimum "no parole" period of 45 years.

On Tuesday, Mabhayi pleaded guilty to 20 charges of murder and 16 of rape.

All his victims were women and children, and he mostly targeted homes where women were the head of the household. After breaking in, Mabhayi would attempt to rape the women and girls in the house, before hacking everyone to death with an axe or panga. Nine of those killed were children, the publication reported. Mabhayi's defence counsel Simphiwe Soga submitted in mitigation of sentence that three matters should be taken into consideration. These were the fact that Mabhayi pleaded guilty to all the charges, that there were "prospects of him being rehabilitated", and that he was a known dagga smoker since being a teenager.

Soga submitted the sentences for crimes committed on the same day, such as when Mabhayi murdered an entire family in May 2012, should run concurrently.

Sentencing would take place on Tuesday.
