Sfiso is hitting all the high notes

Sitting in his lavish living room he caresses the alto saxophone like an old pro hankering after a gig in some smoky club.

We’re in the spectacular Durban beachfront apartment of talented musician S’fiso Ncwane (32) and it’s not hard to visualise him fronting a jazz trio, blowing away like a madman and improvising as he goes along.

“I’ve always had a desire to play the sax,” he chuckles. This is a different side to the S’fiso we all know. Granted, he’s a hotshot gospel crooner whose vocal gymnastics often reduce grown men to tears. He’s also a dab hand on keyboards and drums. But a saxophone?

“I’m a sucker for reed instruments,” he says, fiddling with the keys on the horn. “Seriously, I always get a bang from listening to players such as Kirk Whalum, Kenny G and Dave Koz.

My wife gave me the sax. I’m still a beginner but I reckon in six months I’ll be playing it on stage.” His beautiful wife, Ayanda (28), nods approvingly as she enters the room.

“He’s always had a soft spot for the sax,” she agrees. “So I figured I would buy it for him for his birthday.”
