Sassy Liu Siying, who made headlines when Lewis Hamilton doused her with champagne after Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix, has defended the Formula 1 world champion.

Liu (22), a graduate of the Shanghai Institute of Visual Art who works for a real estate company, told the local Shanghai Daily it was no big deal: “It lasted for only one or two seconds, and I didn’t think too much about it. “I think some foreign media are more sensitive about the topic than local media. I was just told by my employer to stand on the podium, and that’s what I did.”

Hamilton came under fire after photographs emerged of him squirting champagne into Liu’s face on the Shanghai podium emerged. Chinese internet users lashed out at Hamilton’s behaviour and one British newspaper described the racing driver as a “loser”.

The tradition of F1 drivers spraying champagne on the podium dates back decades.

However there will be no champagne to spray in Bahrain this weekend – bottles of non-alcoholic rosewater known as Waard were provided instead.
