Eastern Cape school children resumed the second term of school with a huge shortage of teachers, it was reported on Wednesday.

The Dispatch Online reported it had seen a memo from Cofimvaba education district director Mthunywa Ngonzo sent to officials last month, saying more than 500 teachers had either resigned, died or retired this year.

The memo said that the department would only emply 380 teachers.

“As of March18 the department had a total of 570 net vacancies as a result of natural attrition based on the distributed post basket for public schools in 2013," said Ngonzo.

Provincial education spokesman Loyiso Pulumani confirmed to the Daily Dispatch he was aware of the memo but referred further enquiries to Ngonzo, whose comment could not be obtained by the publication.
