SIS DOLLY - Owning your Fear

Courage does not exist in the absence of fear, and can only be measured by the extent to which we are able to overcome our fears.

MORE often than not people talk about being fearless. I’m not a believer of being fearless, as I think we need to grow into that with courage. You see, courage does not exist in the absence of fear, and can only be measured by the extent to which we are able to overcome our fears. I’ve had one of those periods of time where a lot of things have just gone differently to what I hoped and what I’d need for me to be at my most effective in running my life. Just before this breakdown, as I’ll call it, I was also in a space in my headand my being where I needed to dig deep to find my joy. My place of joy is always exploring a new city in a different country on my own. There have been fewer times in my life where I’ve felt such liberation and excitement and where I’ve had to be courageous in my exploration. I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to travel to a number of countries in Africa as well as other continents. When I think of my adventures, I often smile and shake my head, because I’ve done some really courageous exploring. Pub-hopping in the rain in Hong Kong, on my own, when all my companions faded on meand I wasn’t prepared to sit around and miss seeing the city. Or, hand in hand in a market in Lagos with my driver, who was fiercely protective of me as I explored the market. And when I think about those times now, I realise, if I had disappeared in those places, it would’ve been challenging for anyone to find me.

I believed everything would be just fine. I was prepared to place any fear I had aside and go and do what I wanted to do at that time. Because I know that this is my place of joy: new surroundings, new people, different languages, and different smells.  Just different to the security I know and feel in my comfort zone of the familiar.

What I’m talking about here is this: where we go to in order to push the boundaries of our comfort zones? Where do you need to choose to go to in order to experience your joy? What fears would you need to overcome in order to courageously step into the belief that you can do these things and survive and live to tell exciting tales about a life that’s been lived?

You see, it doesn’t matter how big or small your actions are. It is about how big or small it feels to you in terms of an accomplishment. It’s about how you place the experience in your heart and how it then gives you the inspiration to step into the next place of joy, the next place of conquering your fear and stepping into your courage.

I invite you to first use your experiences of joy so you know where you need to go to find it again. And then, hold that joy in your heart as you create your future. And with every creation, acknowledge the fact that you’ve looked fear in the eye, owned it and courageously stepped into your future.

Know your fear. Own your fear and create from your place of courage into your true greatness.
