A Dobsonville policeman accused of killing an 11-year-old girl appeared in the Protea Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said.

"The case against the police constable was postponed to April 18 for a formal bail application," spokesman Moses Dlamini said.

The constable allegedly shot Kimberly Mzizi on October 22 in Soweto while she was playing with friends. At the time police were chasing a man accused of domestic violence.

Dlamini said shots were fired at the man and one of them hit Mzizi, who later died.
