Sparks fly at the Top Chef SA braai

Working in two teams of four that are determined by a knife pull, the cheftestants have two hours to cook a feast on open fire fit for a top restaurant.

This week’s episode of Top Chef SA starts off with an exciting outdoor Elimination Challenge.

Cooking for the judges on just braais and gas tops sees drama unfold among the cheftestants, from repeated burnt veggies to stolen charcoal and not having the usual kitchen timer.

The panel of judges this week includes three guests; chef patron from Coobs in Parkhurst James Diack, well-known model Lee-Ann Liebenberg and TV presenter Luthando Shosha, fondly known as “LootLove”.

Despite James being the boss of one of the cheftestants and some of them being a little starstruck, each guest judge brings with them an energy that’s welcomed by the cheftestants.

As the pressure in the competition for the Top Chef SA title and R100 000 in cash rises, which cheftestant will fall?

Tune into SABC3 at 8 pm on Tuesday, 23 August 2016 for the next nail-biting episode of Top Chef SA.

Last week, Kim Crystal Clement, owner of Urban Eatery and Central Pizza in Pretoria, was sent packing after she failed to elevate her fast-food dish enough to impress the judges.

Eight chefs are still in the running for the coveted title of South Africa’s first ever Top Chef. They are: Devin Gregory Hogan, head chef and owner at SMAK Delicatessen and Restaurant in Cape Town; Annemarie Robertson, executive chef at Burrata, Bocca & Open Door in Constantia; Hezron Louw, co-owner and chef at the Sumting Fresh Food Bus and Gourmet Street Food Company; Martine Christian, executive chef at Escondido Tapas in Johannesburg; Ayabonga Gope from The Deckhouse in Cape Town; Sachin Gosai, head chef at The National in Parktown North, Johannesburg; Phillip Nel, chef de partie at Rust en Vrede in Stellenbosch; and Linda Nirina Mazibuko, co-owner of Blackcurrant Food Concepts, an events and catering company as well as a food consulting and training company.
