Speed up payment claims: SAMA

The SA Medical Association urged the Gauteng health department on Wednesday to speed up the processing of claims and pay doctors money owed for overtime.

"We have requested the doctors to forward their names to us and submit the claims again... we hope they would get paid, failing which we would have no choice but lodge a dispute," chairwoman of the association's committee for public sector doctors, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, said.

Sama met with department officials on Tuesday in an attempt to resolve the impasse.

It emerged on Monday that doctors at Chris Hani Baragwanath in Soweto and at Pholosong, OR Tambo Memorial, and the Far East hospitals in Ekurhuleni, had not been paid.

Doctors at Baragwanath had not received payments for January this year, while those at the Ekurhuleni hospitals had not been paid since September last year.

The department said some doctors filled in their claim forms incorrectly and had been asked to re-submit them.
