A Johannesburg schoolgirl is in a stable condition in hospital after being stabbed with a pair of scissors by a fellow pupil, officials said on Wednesday.

Gauteng education spokesman Charles Phahlane said a delegation would visit Dr Malan Hoerskool in Meyerton, south of Johannesburg, where the teenager was stabbed on Tuesday.

"We're sending people now to the school," he said, adding that there would be an update after 10am.

The 16-year-old girl was stabbed in the neck by another 16-year-old girl, apparently after an argument during break.

Lt-Col Katlego Mogale said the injured pupil was in the Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital.

Her assailant was in custody. Mogale was not sure when she would appear in court.
