The new job was great – until the boss’ girlfriend stepped in.

“I can see that,” Thabo said. “You spend enough money on clothes, bags and shoes. Why on Earth do you need so many?” “A woman can never have enough shoes,” Maggie said angrily. She rushed out of the office, through the front door and down the steps to where her car was parked, then drove off on screeching tyres. But Phoi knew she would return. She always did – and then acted as if nothing had happened.

It was mid afternoon before Thabo came out of the office. He said, “I’m very happy you have settled in here so well, Phoi. In all honesty I don’t know how I’d have run the place without you. The guests are always telling me how kind and helpful you are to them.” “Thanks Thabo. But I’m only doing my job.” “I know.” He nodded his head up and down several times. Thabo seemed deep in thought.

“Are you okay?” Phoi asked him. “I’m fine!” he said, after a moment when he seemed startled. “I’m going back to my office to sort out the rest of the paperwork.” “I’ll bring you a coffee and a couple of Danish pastries,” said Phoi. As she placed the Danish on his desk Thabo looked up at her.
