Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s State Capture report released yesterday revealed damning evidence

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s State Capture report released yesterday revealed damning evidence about how the Gupta family used its political connections to influence the placing of cabinet ministers, particularly influencing the appointment of Finance Ministers, in order to benefit financially from the state.

Here are some of the findings:

  • Deputy Minister of Finance, Mcebisi Jonas, declined Ajay Gupta’s offer of R600 million to become Minister of finance. He was also offered  a deposit of R600 000 in cash to take in a bag immediately
  • Nhlanhla Nene confirmed that Jonas had told him about the offer to remove him as finance minister but he thought it was a “bluff”.
  • After Nene was removed, President Zuma offered him a job at the African Regional Centre of the BRICS Bank but the offer never materialised.
  • Themba Maseko, former CEO of Government Communications, and Information System received a call from President Zuma to ask him to help the Guptas. Ajay Gupta tried to manipulate him into buy advertising space in their newspaper The New Age.
  • Telephone records confirmed that Des Van Rooyen, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, frequently visited the Gupta family home in Saxonwold during his short-lived term as Finance Minister.
  • Ajay Gupta offered former Member of Parliament, Vytjie Mentor, the position of Minister of Public Enterprise to assist influencing the South African Airways cancellation of the India route, but she declined.
