Students unrest at University of Johannesburg

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) says students demonstrating over funding issues need to take up their grievances with the Higher Education Department and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

According to the Eyewitness news a handful of students, led by the South African Students Congress (Sasco), have been protesting at the university’s Kingsway Campus, calling for it to suspend registration until they can sort out their funding issues with the scheme.

The NSFAS is a government loan and bursary fund that caters for students around the country.

Around 2,100 UJ students have not been able to register as their NSFAS funding is inadequate to cover the cost of their studies.

The students have vowed to continue protesting until their demands are met.
