Stunts, celebrities and ‘Y tjukutja’ at ANC manifesto launch

The ANC manifesto launch attracted throngs of supporters that filled Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga to its capacity on Saturday.

Some people were locked outside the gates, when security guards tried to maintain control at the stadium. There was nearly a stampede at one of the gates as people tried to push their way to the stadium and some supporters were content with watching the proceedings from outside on a big screen TV.

As expected, there was a lot of song and dance and if the song “We want Julius Malema” is anything to go by, ANC supporters are very angry with Malema. The lyrics were too vulgar to be repeated.

After the formal proceedings, where President Jacob Zuma presented the party’s manifesto, the crowds were treated to performances from some of the country’s popular artists.

Artists included the group Uhuru, who performed their hit track ‘Y tjukutja’ which got the youth especially excited at the stadium. Generations and Muvhango actors and actresses and Deborah Fraser, were also amongst the personalities that excited the crowd.

The ANC is probably the only organisation big enough to be able to pay for bikes to be painted in the party’s colours, have bikers perform stunts, invite actors and entertainers like Oskido and Phuzekhemisi to lure voters. - Thembisile Makgalamele
