AS ONE of the world's last remaining absolute monarchs, he continues to rule by decree and lives in luxury while most of his people are stuck in poverty. But it seems time is ticking for Swaziland's King Mswati III and the question on everyone's lips after the country's recent run of protests is no longer if he will be toppled, but when.

As with so many of the pro-democracy protests that have turned into revolutions in the Arab states recently, this small kingdom has seen a mushrooming of social media networks, where pictures and information are being shared like never before. A photograph taken on a cellphone and posted on Twitter was the first indication to those living outside Swaziland that a brutal police crackdown was taking place. Within hours of the event it was splashed across the front pages of South African newspapers and the word was out – Swaziland was in turmoil.
