Swiping towards a better future

You’ve done it! Together with Woolworths you have helped raise over R100 million to give children in South Africa a better shot at a great education. With support from MySchool, Woolworths set a challenge: To raise R100 million by the end of December 2016.

The result: 1,213,045 customers contributed to 7353 schools and managed to exceed the target and raise R104, 911,304. With every swipe of a MySchool Card or linked Woolies Card at Woolworths, the company gave up to 1% back to linked schools.

Where the funds go

What these schools are doing with the money is perhaps even more impressive than the amount raised.

The Athlone School for the Blind has approached The Botanical Society of South Africa, and together they’re creating a sensory garden for their visually impaired learners.

A partnership between St Stithians and the Nehemiah Education Ministry has led to the development of five Early Childhood Development Centers in and around Ivory and Ebony Park with their MySchool funds contributing directly to this outreach programme.

Thohoyandou Primary School in Pretoria South is a no-fee Venda-speaking school and is one of 66 Gauteng ‘under-performing’ schools. Through the Brain Boosters initiative and by providing teachers with reusable recourses, the school is able to offer better opportunities

Your school could also have a story, so next time you’re at a teachers’ meeting, or standing next to the sport field, ask your headmaster how MySchool funds help your school.  The more parents are swiping for their schools the more money is raised for those schools.

Keep swiping

The goal has been reached, but the quest to make a difference in education continues. So remember to swipe your MySchool or linked Woolies card with every purchase. Also make sure that your preferred school is linked to your card – remember, you can load up to 3 schools as beneficiaries. Visit www.myschool.co.za to check.
