Tears and blood in Durban

Many foreign nationals, fearing for their lives, have their homes in Chatsworth, KwaZulu-Natal.

Tears stream down Phumeza Nqabeni’s face as her Mozambican partner, Alfred Santana (30), boards a bus back to his native country. Phumeza, who hails from Qumbu in the Eastern Cape, has two young children with Alfred.

They had been renting a backyard room in Chatsworth, south of Durban, for four years when horrific xenophobic attacks broke out in KwaZulu-Natal last month.
