Teeing off in the township

HE NURTURED his love for golf on an empty stretch of veld beside a municipal dump, practising his swing with a wire golf club and a bluegum seed pod in place of a ball.

But today the children of Nemato township outside Port Alfred don’t have to start where he did. They can go to a driving range and get free lessons from the 87-member Nemato Golf Club.

And the range is just the beginning – George Mbomboyi (63) and his clubmates are developing a nine-hole golf course that they hope will be completed in six months.

George and his colleagues spent a large part of their working lives as caddies for the wealthy at the exclusive Royal Port Alfred Golf Club. Now, however, they are determined the children of Nemato won’t regard golf as only a rich man’s game.
