A 15-year-old boy was shot dead during a stand-off with police following an illegal drag racing event in Durban on Saturday, police said.

Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker said that police had been called out

following complaints of "people spinning tyres and drag racing" at a taxi

rank in Inanda.

He said that initial allegations were that a mob of about 200 drivers and spectators attacked police.

"It is alleged that shots were fired and a 15-year old boy was shot in the cheek," he said.

The boy died from his injuries. Naicker did not say who had fired the shots, but that the Independent Police Investigations Directorate had been called in to investigate the shooting and were at the scene on Saturday night.

"The area is very tense and the Public Order Policing [unit] are keeping an eye on the situation," Naicker said.
