Acclaimed South African movie ‘Nothing for Mahala’ starring Thapelo Mokoena will be screened on TV.

The popular film premieres on SABC1 on Sunday 2 March at 8pm.

If you haven’t seen the much-talked-about movie, Nothing for Mahala, then you’re in luck.

Billed as one of 2013’s best South African films by critic Barry Ronge, Nothing for Mahala looks at issues of money and values in a changing society.

Known for his ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ moves, Thapelo takes on the role of Axe Gumede, a property agent on the verge of closing a career-propelling deal.

On the surface, Axe appears successful with a flashy sports car and an apartment address to match.

But his suave appearance belies a debt-ridden lifestyle part-financed by greedy loan sharks.

“These days materialism seems to override values, the culture of ‘making it big’ – no matter what or who stands in your way trends negatively,” says SABC commissioning editor, Surekha Singh.

“This film makes us think deeper about our financial management and responsibility.”
