When Twitter bosses banned rapper Azealia Banks for racist comments made towards former One Direction star Zayn Malik, it brought an end to one of the most spectacular social media meltdowns in recent history.

Azealia is not the first celebrity to lose it on social media, and surely won’t be the last. As she will now be forced to air her outspoken views elsewhere, we’ve taken a look at the stars that have made themselves look extremely silly with over the top online debacles.

1) Azealia Banks

The recent tirade of racist and homophobic abuse that the 212 musician directed at Zayn may have been the final straw for Twitter bosses, as it certainly wasn’t her first offence. In 2014 she was called out by filmmaker Judd Apatow for tweets mocking the women who accused veteran American funnyman Bill Cosby of rape.

She has also caused controversy with previous comments about gay people and has attacked “white men” who she once wrote should all be “locked up” for crimes committed by their ancestors.

Ultimately however, it is her rant against Zayn, which included tweets mocking his Pakistani heritage (she called him a "curry scented b***h”) that has seen her step over the line and receive a ban. She’s since apologised for her comments towards the pop star.

2) Kanye West

Kanye likes to think of himself as the king of hip hop, but really he’s the monarch of the social media meltdown. Earlier this year he left Twitter users bewildered with a bizarre series of online tirades which included an admission he was $53 million (£37 million) in debt, messages to billionaire Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg begging for cash and rants about his artistic ambitions. “Mark Zuckerberg I know it’s your bday but can you please call me by 2mrw…,” he wrote in one post, accompanied by others declaring his genius and need for funding. Asking billionaires to lend him money is just a flavour of Kanye’s online eccentricity, in 2016 alone he’s argued with ex-girlfriend Amber Rose over their bedroom habits, posted motivational messages to himself and aired his views on everything from suit jackets to the price of school textbooks.
