Maria got an axe and went looking for her husband’s nyatsi.

When Maria married Ntate Moka in Mango Village, her family was dead against it from the very beginning. But she still held her head high and married him. Everyone else in the village knew that he was a womaniser and abuser.

His first wife had left him because she simply couldn’t stand it any more. After his divorce, Ntate Moka felt no shame – he began courting Maria, who was 20 years old at the time and half his age. Luckily for him, the innocent and headstrong Maria fell for his charms and agreed to marry him.

Maria’s mother told her, “If you want to be Ntate Moka’s punching bag, go ahead and get married to him. But if something happens and the whole thing ends in tears, don’t say that we didn’t warn you.” Maria didn’t say anything and simply walked away.

In the early years of their marriage they were the perfect couple of Mango Village. Ntate Moka was a real gentleman, far from the monster they had labelled him to be. By the time they had reached their 15th marriage anniversary, they had two children and Ntate Moka’s business was doing well. Some people envied them, while others admired them. The Mokas seemed to have it all – but behind closed doors things were starting to get nasty.
