The death of Solly Tyibilika has been surrounded by a fury of conspiracy theories and drama. On Saturday night the former springbok player was killed by a hail of bullets in a tavern in Gugulethu,Cape Town.

According to the Cape Times, Tyibilika was the third victim after two of his friends were also killed in the past weeks.

Simon Dan Shumane, 25, and Sandile Magunqu, 27, were arrested together with Tyibilika on October 17 when police found a 9mm pistol in their car, the newspaper reported. The three were released on bail and were due to appear in court January 26.

Subsequently, Magunqu was shot dead along Tom Street in Gugulethu and Shumane was shot dead a week later.

Daily Voice reported on Tuesday that Solly had fell in with the “wrong crowd” and this ultimately led to his violent death.  “He was disappointed in himself for not being able to manage his finances,” an anonymous source told the Daily Voice.

Tyibilika was primed for great things. He scored a try in his first match for the Boks against Scotland. He was part of the Springboks’ 2006 Tri-Nations Series squad. Border Bulldogs dropped Tyibilika at the start of this year.

It is alleged that Tyibilikas family is unable to afford the funeral arrangements to bury Tyibilika due to financial woes.

His former club Hamiltons Rugby Club  sent out an e-mail to club members appealing for donations to cover his burial.

“As you are all aware, Solly Tyibilika our teammate was tragically taken from us on Sunday,” first team manager Michael Stakemirethe wrote.

“Solly went through difficult times. He has left behind a wife and two children, Solly Junior and Oewth [a nine-month-old daughter].

“It would be appreciated if you would please consider making a donation towards the funeral and other costs that the family is going to have to pay for.”

Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said “The motive for the murder [of Tyibilika] is unknown but we do not suspect any gang involvement.”
