The Godfather

He looks as if he was born to spin the vinyls and entertain the masses with his particular brand of house music. So it’s strange to see DJ Christos, the Godfather of House, is equally at home with his son tugging at his hand demanding to be taken to the bathroom, or looking at his lovely wife, Tebogo, as she rushes around putting the finishing touches to the Sunday lunch.

We’re at their home-away-from home – Shaguma Garden Cafe, a restaurant they run together in Crowthorne, Midrand, north of Joburg, where the couple spend much of their free time relaxing in the company of family and friends.

The perfect Sunday afternoon is filled with the sound of children laughing and playing on the beautifully  manicured lawns of the restaurant. It’s a relaxed atmosphere so it’s no wonder they spend so much time here. DJ Christos (42). surname Katsaitis, is a legendary club and MetroFM DJ, and he and Tebogo (32) run the restaurant and KatsaitisMusic, which is an events organising company.

“This is more than just a restaurant,” says Tebogo, who also heads the marketing and admin side of Katsaitis Music. And judging by how relaxed Christos looks in shorts and sandals, she’s right.

“It’s such a serene place to spend quality time with family.” While Tebogo, wearing an elegant floral maxi dress, attends to the patrons, their three children Taki (12), Christos’ child from a former relationship, CJ (7) and Michail (3) are working up an appetite playing on the lawn.

“This is a place where I can interact with our patrons and bond with my boys,’’ says Christos. “Some weekend evenings I turn it into a lounge and play for my people while they wine and dine – it’s very relaxed.”
