Outside the court premises, several journalists with cameras stood at the gates hoping to get a glimpse of the suspect.

Security was tight at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court when a 29-year-old man appeared for the murders of Yonelisa Mali, two, and her three-year-old cousin Zandile Mali. The prime suspect was arrested in Alexandra last week.

The two toddlers were buried in Diepsloot on Saturday in an emotional ceremony attended by large crowds of mourners.

The toddlers were found dead in a communal toilet last Tuesday after they were reported missing several days earlier. It was believed they had been raped.

Residents gathered at the police station on Friday demanding that the suspect be released to them. Four other men have been arrested in connection with the case.

They appeared in court on Friday and their case was postponed to Thursday so they could secure legal aid.
