The real Bongani

Unlike his character in Zone 14, Bongani Maseko has left his life of crime behind him.

He makes people tremble with fear when  he walks through the streets of Zone 14. Even the most hard-core criminals are terrified of him.

He’s one man that the feared Ntate Moloi trusts to do his dirty work for him. Nkosinathi, aka Sledge, is the character many fans have grown to love to hate over the past three years on the SABC1 drama series.

Like his on-screen character, Bongani Maseko (32) is a bit intimidating at first sight, and what many of  his fans may not know is that he’s done time in jail.

When he arrives at our Sandton studios he’s dressed exactly like Sledge, in a black suit.

But we soon learn there’s a reason for this attire.  “I do motivational speaking in schools around Alex and other places, and the kids expect to see Sledge when I come to talk to them,” he says.

Unlike Nkosinathi, who never smiles or jokes around, we find out that Bongani is very much a joker. Initially he wasn’t too happy about playing a gangster but at the time he was desperate for work so he didn’t have much choice.
