There’s a festive mood in Rosebank’s Cofi restaurant. the patrons are enjoying their lunch and the relaxed, chilled out vibe.

It’s the perfect place to meet the team behind MetroFM’s hit lunchtime show, the Secret Ingredient. It should come as no surprise that hosts

Amon Mokoena, Thato Mataboge and Kgopedi Namane are riding the crest of a wave of popularity.

Right now their show has more than 700 000 listeners nationwide and they’re the flavour of the month.

It’s growing so fast because even though the threesome debate controversial topics, they bring a dose of humour to the issues of the day.

Thato is first to arrive at Cofi – he’s come in early because he’s got to leave shortly to catch a flight to Las Vegas to see Kanye West and Jay-Z in concert.

The trip will be something of a pilgrimage for the 32-year-old, who got his big break at YFM through his mentor, DJ Fresh.

“It wasn’t easy for me to get into radio,” he says. “I had to hustle my way in.” But now that he’s in and well on his way, he feels like he’s living the dream he’s had since he was a schoolboy.

“I just love our show,” he says as our stylists prepare him for the shoot. “I’m given free rein to be myself and I love the interaction

Just then Amon and Kgopedi walk in and the chemistry between the three is immediately evident. “Eish, I almost didn’t recognise you!

You look so stylish, my man,” says Amon, teasing thato, who’s now been through a grooming transformation.

Soon the Secret Ingredient crew is laughing and challenging each other just as they do on air each day. But they also have a serious side and seem to enjoy hearing about each other’s long road to radio fame.
