North West Police Divers have retrieved the bodies of two men from a dam in Marikana.

It is alleged that the two were thrown into the dam to drown by community members who accused them of stealing from a local shop.

The men were allegedly caught red-handed in the afternoon of Friday, 1 January 2016 by a shop owner. The shop owner blew a whistle and the community responded.

It is not yet clear what the men were stealing at the time. However, it is reported that the community assaulted the men and tied their hands before throwing them in the dam.

Two counts of murder have been opened and no arrests have been made as yet.

The South African Police say investigations are underway and have urged communities to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, but rather to report criminal activities to the police and let the law take its course.
